Police arrests vicar, film director in sex scandal case

Kerala:

Four people, including an assistant vicar and a film director, were arrested in connection with the Thoppumpady sex scandal of 2002.

A special police team investigating the case arrested Father Kuriakose Mangalath of the St Mary’s Jacobite Church, Manarcaud (Kottayam), his accomplice Shibu from Kottayam, film director Rajan Sitara from Thrissur and Abdul Khader from Paravoor near here, police said. Later, the arrested were produced before First Class Judicial Magistrate K S Sharatchandran here and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

The case, registered in 2002, relates to alleged sexual exploitation of a 16-year-old girl and the scandal came to light when police raided a in the city. It is alleged that the girl was subjected to rape by several persons and police had arrested 13 others in connection with the case. In 2006, the Kerala High Court had directed the Director-General of Police (DGP) to constitute a special investigation team following which a special team was constituted under Special Branch SP, A V George.
